A practical approach to EEG interpretation is needed, as many other books addressing electroencephalography are highly technical and not written for beginners. Dr. Libenson meets his objective well as he clearly outlines the basic principles of EEG interpretation.Audience: Aimed at beginning learners in electroencephalography, the book targets neurology residents and clinical neurophysiology fellows. It appears to be best suited for learners who are unfamiliar with EEG, specifically neurology residents. For clinical neurophysiology fellows, this would be an adequate review, but they would later need more detailed knowledge of EEG.Features: A brief introduction to the history of EEG begins the book, which then moves on to cover topics such as visual analysis, localization, artifacts, and filters. The last several chapters address conditions seen in electroencephalography, including epilepsy, normal variants, coma, and neonatal EEG. Throughout each chapter, schematic diagrams and well-marked EEG examples support the clearly written text. These features help learners get a conceptual understanding of EEG. What is lacking is a specific section devoted to basic electronics and electrical safety. Some of these concepts are dispersed throughout the book, but are not directly addressed.Assessment: There are few other books that specifically address the beginning EEG reader. Thus far, this is the most straightforward and concise book for neurology residents being introduced to EEG. It is not a comprehensive EEG textbook, and it is not meant to be. Independent of other instruction, detailed study of this book would give learners the basic foundation for evaluating an EEG.
